In this unit we consider many alternative approaches and perspectives on how organisational creativity and innovation might be promoted or blocked in practice across multiple levels: individual, group and organisation.  Assignment 1 is specifically concerned with promoting individual creativity as it contributes to the innovation process.

  1. You are required to critically evaluate individual creativity in the context of your workplace, firstlythrough the identification of individual blocks that inhibit the process, and secondly you will need to consider which of the alternative approaches is most relevant in this context as an intervention designed to promote individual creativity and innovation.
  • You will then need to demonstrate a systematic understanding and critical appreciation of the process of creativity and innovation drawing on contemporary theories to support your evaluation and synthesis.
  • You will develop a plan to promote individual creative thinking in your work organisation with a view to enhancing innovation. You will need to include an in-depth literature review critically evaluating alternative contemporary perspectives in order to draw meaningful conclusions and develop feasible recommendations.
  • You will present your analysis and plan in report format of approximately 1500 words excluding references and appendices.
  • In the unlikely event that your work organisation prevents adequate analysis, the UK Tutor can agree an alternative. You are not permitted to use a case study of your own choice unless approved in advance by the UK tutor.  Use of an unapproved alternative case study will result in failure of the assignment.

Executive Summary

The purpose of this report was informed by the fact that creativity in any organization is critical for their successful performance. This report has recommended on the best approaches that organization management can follow to promote and establish an intense creativity and innovation. This is since creativity and innovation has been suggested as a best practice in harnessing the competitive advantage. In this study, literature has been reviewed with the most appropriate frameworks of innovation and creativity highlighted. In order to successfully implement creativity and innovation in workplaces, this study has recommended organizations to establish a high-commitment among all members of an organization, encouraging diversity to promote creativity and innovation, hiring individuals who understand the vision of an organization and aligning it with the culture.  The last recommendation was emotional engagement through empowerment of their employees. The rationale of these recommendations were founded on the fact that facilitation of creativity and innovation demands an awareness of internal environmental factors to ensure that creative ideas are supported through successful innovations.

Introduction

In the last two decades, there has been an increased focus on creativity and innovation as a consequence of the turbulent changes in business environment, stiff competition in global market, and improved knowledge-oriented economy. This report discusses the development of creativity and innovation as part of change management in a workplace environment.  According to Magadley and Birdi (2009), through a creative process, employees are tasked to explore high profitable outcomes of an existing potential endeavor which is a process to generate and apply alternative options for a company product, services, and procedures.  Therefore, apart from an organization performance, creativity and innovation lead to solving problems and practical development. Nevertheless, the majority of the companies are not able to harness creativity and innovation. This is since they lack a clear understanding of the internal environmental factors that promote ideal creative ideas. Taking this into account, this report develops a plan for promoting creative thinking in a workplace environment to enhance innovation. This would be achieved through an evaluation of influential contemporary theories for analyzing in-depth and synthesizing organizational systems.

The concept of Creativity and Innovation

There are a broad range of definitions for creativity. However, Miron-Spektor et al. (2011); Klijnand Tomic (2010) empirical research defined it as an outcome, and production of new and useful ideas relating to products, services, processes, and procedures. Taking into account of these definitions, current research has explored on the creative solutions to business issues, creating business strategies, and job processes creative changes (Ramaswamy & Gouillart, 2010; Schaltegger et al., 2012; Volmer et al., 2012). Taking into account of these research works, creative outcomes can be ranging from minor adaptations in workflow or products to significant breakthroughs and new products development or products. Additionally, creativity is a useful novelty as fundamental conditions for an idea or solution but at the same time valuable to an organizational context.
