Question:

Part 1
  1. Some HR managers argue that their approach towards employees is ethical simply because it complies with all the expectations of employment law.
    1. To what extent do you agree with this conception of HR ethics and why?
    2. Drawing on up to three examples, explain how employment regulations sometimes permit employers to act unethically, while still staying firmly within the law.
  2. Despite some reduction in recent years, it remains the case in the UK that 28% of men and 10% of women work more than 45 hours a week, sometimes much more. 1. To what extent do you agree that presenteeism should be seen as an ethical problem by managers? Justify your answer.
    2. In what ways is a culture of presenteeism harder for some groups to comply with than others? What are the consequences?
    3. What can HR managers do to help tackle these issues in practice?

Solution:

Part 1:

Conception of HR ethics and why

The conception of HR ethics is informed by the increased discussions on the employee relationships and if or not there can be a standard of the same. The rights of employees and their duties and freedom and discrimination in the workplace have all been issues of concern in the HR ethics. Further, there has been argument that the employee relationship is constant with less ethical issues at place with others disagreeing with the view. For instance, the issues of right to privacy, right to be paid in line with the work (fair payment) and right to privacy have all been issues of ethics which cannot be underestimated.
