Identifying areas for research and designing appropriate research tools for use with human participants

Question:

This assignment offers the opportunity to practice identifying areas for research and designing appropriate research tools for use with human participants. The assignment is broken into two parts. The first part asks you to conduct a systematic literature search to identify a research topic and the second asks you to design an appropriate research tool to investigate the topic.

Part 1 (1500 words)

Conduct a literature search on a health topic of your choosing. You should consider the related task in Part 2 before deciding on your topic to be sure that it is appropriate. Detail each stage of the literature search including your chosen framework, keywords, search sources and results. You may wish to present the results of your search in a flowchart indicating the number of searches and the progression of your search. (500 words)

Critically appraise the literature on your chosen health topic to identify a research need. (1000 words)

You should summarise this part by identifying a research question which can be investigated.

Part 2 (1000 words)

Design and present a data collection instrument which fits your research question. You may design a qualitative, quantitative or mixed methods data collection instrument.

Describe your data collection instrument with consideration for the following; suitability of your instrument to meet the research question, rationale for your choice of instrument, instructions for its use, potential bias, how you may involve participants in the design of the instrument and ethical considerations related to it’s use. Your ethical considerations may include, consent procedures, collection, storage and identification of sensitive information or participant data, participant withdrawal procedures and any other ethical considerations related to your instrument.

The types of data collection instruments you could design could include questionnaires, semi-structured interview schedules, focus group schedules and participant observation guidelines. Further methods may be considered provided you can describe the methodology in detail as a separate methodology instrument.

You should attach your data collection instrument to your assignment as an appendix.

Important Note-This is a hypothetical exercise; you should not approach any participants to complete your instrument. However, you should reflect upon the real-world issues that may be presented when engaging with human participants in research.

Part 1: Systematic Analysis (Literature Search)

Introduction

In hospitals, the Emergency Departments are operational for 24 hours. According to Wamba et al. (2015) in the contemporary healthcare system, the occupational stress and burnouts among the practitioners have turned to be a phenomenal aspect eliciting direct implications on their practice. Specifically, owing to the state of services offered in the emergency departments in distinct hospitals, the rates of occupational burnouts have accelerated. One of the key causes of the burnouts is the strenuous conditions that healthcare practitioners in emergency departments such as doctors and nurses and doctors are forced to operate for 24 hours. The need for systematic evaluation of the literature is prompted by the fact that this is a high-pressure environment characterized with multifaceted stressors and factors owing to the burnout factors. This is the foundation of this systematic literature analysis to evaluate on the causes of occupational stress and burnout among the healthcare professionals.

Literature Search Strategies

It is essential to create a search strategy approach for the systematic literature review.  The literature review will include the selection of the review topic, searching the most relevant literature, reading all the selected literature sources and lastly critically appraising the literature.  An evaluation carried out by Webster et al. (2015) the literature review source that is potentially incremented to quality systematic review must possess an effective introduction, discussion of the body and a conclusion. For the sake of enhancing an elaborate search strategy, a Boolean operator was employed to connect all the used search terms in the realms of the database to identify the relevant information.

In order to offer evidence of the extensiveness and thoroughness of review, it is critical for clarifying on the search strategies and terms employed. In this particular study, the search engines include Medline, Embase, PubMed and Google Scholar. In ensuring that the study was effective, search terms were selected for this review. The search terms included the occupational stress/burnouts, Emergency Health care practitioners and Emergency department in hospitals. The rationale for adopting the search terms was based on ensuring that access is achieved for the majority of the recent and current search results. The research question selected for this literature was “What are the significant elements that elicit the high levels of occupational burnouts amongst the healthcare professionals in different hospitals emergency departments?”

Literature Review Process

For the conclusive literature review, one day was enough for the process. As aforementioned, the ideal databases selected for this review included the Ovid, Medline, Embase, Google Scholar and PubMed. In light of this, due to the broadness of the databases, there was a need to trim the content searched and obtained through the help of the distinct keywords. In the search process, there were words related to the health care provision in emergency departments such as healthcare provider, healthcare emergency personnel, and healthcare ambulance workers. This was in combination with terms related to emergency departments such as emergency room, emergency unit, emergency center and trauma center.
