1.0 Introduction

1.1 Aim of the Project:

The strategic aim of this Math’s IA project is exploring on whether alcoholism, physical fitness, age, and height have an impact on an individual lung capacity. In this essence, to be able to identify the relationship of lung capacity and the identified factors, data collection and analysis will be carried out. A comparison between selected alcoholics and non-alcoholics will be conducted targeting to determine the correlation between the factors with lung capacity.  It is most likely that this project will hypothesize that the overall lung capacity will be bigger in the case of non-alcoholics and limited for those abusing alcohol. This will be irrespective of the gender of the individual. To prove this analogy, it is essential to carry out this project analysis and data evaluation.

1.2 Research Objectives

In order to achieve the above aims, specific objectives will guide the actualization of this study. The objectives include:

1. To evaluate the validity of the above hypothesis through carrying our lung capacity measurement procedures
2. To test approximately 40 people all divided equally into alcoholics, non-alcoholics and from both gender groups (male & female). The sample used in this study was sourced from IB diploma students in Netherlands. In this case, random sampling strategy was used where 10 students of each gender, alcoholic and non-alcoholic were selected. After the selection, they were all required to fill the issued questionnaire. Later, a test for determining their lung capacity was conducted. The test for lung capacity was carried out using a lung capacity meter where the participants were expected to make 3 trials to enable picking off the average value of lung capacity.
3. Physical fitness and height were also considered as this could have been identified physically without application of any tests.
4. The age was also taken into account. All the selected participants were 16 to 21 years of age as 16 years is the legalized age for smoking in the country

1.3 Questions used in Data Collection

First, all the participants were notified on the purpose of the research which is data collection and analysis. In light of this, all the questionnaires and forms issued targeted the 40 respondents whom the lung capacity tests were conducted.

The questions selection was hedged on the type of information that the research intended to gain from the respondents. A sample of questions includes:

• How long have been taking alcohol? (for those who are alcoholic only)
• For the purpose of determining the lung capacity tests for the targeted respondents, two tests were carried out. They include:

• Lung capacity in cubic centimeters

1.4 Hypotheses

According to Creswell (2013), a hypothesis is the supposition or proposed explanation composed taking into account of the existing limited evidence as the initial step to guide extensive evaluation. This study hence had its initial hypothesis which includes:

• Consistent alcohol abuse decreases the lung capacity substantially
• An individual gender, height measurements, and physical fitness directly influence the lung volume
• All the factors are independent of each other. For instance, a female can be alcoholic but does not participate in physical fitness activities and vice versa. Also, both genders can participate in physical fitness activities hence higher lung capacity which are not dependent on their height
