(Solution) 5HR01 An analysis of the key causes of employee grievances. (AC 3.2)

Solution

Employee grievance is defined as the discontentment felt and expressed by employees towards managers or employers. It results from gaps between employee expectations and what the employer gives (PeopleHum Technology Inc., 2022).
Grievances arise due to various factors, which include unfair/unfavourable employment terms or conditions; harassment/bullying in the workplace, occupational hazards, and change in working practices (CIPD, 2022).
Unfairness may be perceived in pay packages, where some employees feel they are paid less than others even though they do similar jobs. When this happens, employee morale drops and this negatively affects output and organisational performance. It could also employees to quit. To avoid this, grievances over pay may be solved through salary reviews.
Grievances over employee safety together with health, or generally concerning occupational safety, can be addressed through regular risk assessments and taking of necessary actions to enhance workplace safety.
Bullying takes many forms in the workplace, with common ones being ignoring people, overloading certain employees with work, spreading malicious words about a person, offensive jokes, physical attacks, and name-calling (Zambre, 2020). It may lower victims’ morale and eventually cause him/her to quit if not addressed early enough. Bullying grievances are best addressed through zero tolerance policies- taking disciplinary action on bullies.
