Knowledge

CIPD Profession Map outlines various core knowledge and specialist knowledge associated with leaders and managers (CIPD, 2022). Leadership knowledge based on the map include business acumen and culture and behaviour. Leaders need to have business intelligence so that they can set a vision that has a purpose and competitive. When setting a vision, they should understand how culture and behaviours include achievement of the vision. On the other hand, management knowledge are employee experience and employee relations (CIPD, 2022). Managers need to have knowledge about how to build a workplace environment where people feel happy and motivated to work in. resolving workplace disputes should be an integral part of United LEC management. Knowledge for leadership is needed to determine future business direction while management knowledge is to ensure continuous improvement.

Skills

Leadership skills include communication and strategic thinking skills (Ojogiwa, 2021). Leaders need communication skills to communicate the vision in a clear and concise manner to ensure everyone understand what the vision is. Leaders demonstrate strategic thinking by embracing the future and new possibilities. They are creative in such a way that they create a better vision for their company. In comparison, management skills include problem-solving and change management. Managers need to solve overarching challenges affecting teams and organisation and be able to introduce and manage change including challenging change resistance (Foster, 2021). Both leaders and managers need communication skills as employee need to be informed and briefed about where their organization stands. Leadership communication should inspire while management communication should encourage employees to reach targets. While leaders make decisions on organizational level, managers are accountable for decisions on departmental level.

Behaviours

Behavioural theory of leadership supports the idea that leaders are defined based on their behaviours and not natural attributes (Samul, 2020). These behaviours are learned and can be observed from the surrounding. Leadership behaviours include passion for learning and professional courage (CIPD, 2022). Leaders need to stay updated with industry trends to determine direction of the business. They also need courage to set a vision and communicate it to all departmental levels. On the other hand, management behaviours include ethical practice and commercial drive (CIPD, 2022). Managers need to make decisions that treats everyone with respect and dignity. They also need to be result-driven by showing focus on customers and creating value for the business. While managers need ethics for good decisions, leaders need ethics to treat their followers fairly and equally. Managers also need courage to communicate change and challenge any opposition when initiating change.
