(Solution) 5CO01 Employee Experience of Change at Calmere House and the Kübler-Ross Change Curve (AC2.4)

Solution

Q8. Explain the experience of change for the employees at Calmere House and examine how this
is reflected through the stages of one model. (AC 2.4)

When the Calmere House was acquired by the Chaffinch Group, this caused great disturbance to the employees in the company. The transition of the a flat, inclusive, family-run structure to a hierarchical, bureaucratic one resulted in reactions that were emotional and behaviour-related and could be explained with the help of the Kubler-Ross Change Curve. Initially formulated to characterise the process of grief, the model has been significantly revised to address a response to organisational change (Malik, 2022).

Shock and Denial

The personnel were shocked initially and were unable to believe the sale had taken place. Kirsten was always perceived to be extremely loyal to Calmere House, and her unexpected departure left people confused and in denial. The absence of consultation for the sale and the swift roll-out of new frameworks also added to this phase of denial.

Anger

As things were changed—e.g., autocratic management, decreased staff voice, faceless interactions—staff grew resentful. They felt disrespected and betrayed, particularly because their values and efforts were no longer being respected. The resentment was also generated because colleagues were replaced with new agency staff.

Bargaining During this stage, employees attempted to uphold parts of the previous culture like working overtime
