(Solution) CIPD 5OS06 (AC1.2) Explain the meanings of ‘leadership development’ and ‘management development’

Leadership Development

According to CIPD, 2023, leadership development refers to the process of developing an individual’s ability to lead, motivate and direct others to achieve organisational goals. It is about developing skills like strategic thinking, emotional intelligence, communication, setting up vision and inspiring teams. While routine management is about driving change, innovation, influence and motivation of people excluding people outside the formal authority is all about leadership.

I would develop a leader through use of a mix of formal training, mentor engagement and experiential learning. For example, executive coaching, leadership workshops, and cross functional projects, could be conducted to build resilience, strategic vision and adaptability with potential leaders. Leaders would be encouraged to reflect using 360-degree feedback and are set personal development plans that would enable them to know their strength and growth area, which will adapt to organizational needs too (Das, and Rajini, 2023).

Developing a manager focuses more on technical and operational skills such as planning, budgeting, performance monitoring, and process optimization. In leadership development, it is about to influence and inspire, but in management development, it is about control, execution and system administering (IIENSTITU, 2025). Although leadership tries to create direction and change while management does the same to ensure stability and consistency, both are important.

Management development

According to CIPD (2022), Management development is the process of improving the managerial skills, knowledge and abilities of a manager to be able to plan, organize and control resources in an organisation in a structured manner. They are trained to keep things stable, to run things according to the procedures and deliver the results through the given structures. I would use targeted training
