Individual, team and organizational objectives – linkages explained
An organization exists to achieve objectives. If it is a business, the main aim is to earn profit and in case of not-for-profit, there are other objectives such as raising funds for charity. Teams and individuals work for the organization and therefore alignment of individual and team objectives with those of organization are of pivotal importance if an organization is to ever achieve its objectives. This concept of alignment of objectives is often referred to as goal congruence. Meaning that all three elements pursue the same objectives that are reflected in vision and mission statements of the organization.
Often times this alignment does not exist and it results in individual and team performance driven away from the organizational objectives. Consider the following example that explains the importance of alignment of organizational, team and individual objectives:
Example:
Organizational goal is to achieve growth rate of 10% year on year at a price of AED 100 per unit. This organizational objective is translated down to sales team and means that sales team has to sell 1 500 units during the year. Now since the individuals’ commission is linked with the sales made, they will tend to sell on discount (say at AED 80 per unit) to generate more sales. But the organizational objective was to sell 1 500 units at a price of AED 100 per unit.
