Activity 1 (AC 3.2, 3.3)
(This is an activity you need to complete in order to successfully complete
Part 2, so there is no word count allocation for this)

Within different L&D activities, select and apply at least 2 strategies for engaging
learners (e.g. enabling learners to see relevance of learning; encouraging
learner choice & responsibility; agreeing ‘learning contracts’; using a variety of
learning methods to meet different needs and preferences; taking creative and
exciting approaches to learning design and delivery; taking creative approaches
to motivating and involving learners).
Monitor and draw conclusions about the effectiveness of these strategies.

Activity 2

(AC 1.1)
2. What reasons are there (at least three) for learners not engaging in L&D?
(AC 1.2)
3. Please give two examples of how has work from the field of psychology been
used within L&D, to help engage learners? (AC 2.1)
4. Please give two examples of how work from the field of neuroscience has
been, or could be, used within L&D, to help engage learners? (AC 2.2)
5. What ethical factors do we need to consider when making use of psychology
and neuroscience-based models, theories, tools or materials, to enhance
learner engagement? (AC 2.3)
6. Please give an example of how we can engage learners at each stage of the
training cycle (e.g. in identifying their own needs; planning their own
development; participating in learning activities; and contributing to
evaluation)? Include 1 example for each stage. (AC 3.1)
7. What strategies have you personally tried for enhancing learner
engagement? Refer to Activity 1 for this. (AC 3.2)
8. How did you monitor the effectiveness of these – and how effective were
they? Refer to Activity 1 for this. (AC 3.3)

Slide 1: 3.2 Strategies for engaging learners

Learner engagement is defined in Explore talent (2020) as a measure reflecting on the quantity and quality of learners participation in courses and other aspects of educational programs. This is also inclusive of the learner’s interaction and cooperation with the co-learners and instructors. Simply put, it is used to measure the potentially of successful learning experience for all involved players.

Also, in enhancing learner engagement, Personnel Today (2020) note that this encourages a consumer-like experiences as a critical ingredient of successful learning. This means attentive, connected, persistent and committed.

In the current COVID-19 pandemic, CIPD (2020) report highlighted that learner engagement is critical to ensure alignment of the learning processes with learners needs. This similarly facilitate a close interaction of senior leaders and other people professionals for meeting changing needs for employees.

Slide 2: 3.2 Strategies for engaging learners

Taking creative approaches for motivating and involving learners– As evidenced in Explore talent (2020), this include the integration of different approaches for ensuring that the courses are successful with new knowledge and skills adopted. In setting and communicating elaborate learning goals, the learner attention is captured from the start. Also, this is applied by ensuring that the learning content is convenient. One of the tool that can be used is LMS which is a tool to create the learning content to be accessed at any time. The course content must also be creative and delivered in an interactive manner such as using online resources (YouTube Videos). Learners can also be rewarded with their progress observed, remarkable improvement noted and noteworthy achievements.

Variety of learning methods for meeting distinct needs and preferences– In line with VP Legacies (2020) guide, the need for a variety of learning methods is informed by the fact that learners are categorised into challenge-based, explorer or a socializer. To engage these different learners, holistic methods must be applied which include cognitive methods, appealing strategies to distinct personalities and fitting to the learners needs. stories and examples, pictures and objects, using music, special guests invitation and varying activities

Enabling learners to see relevance of learning– This is intended to ensure that the learners are directing on their learning process and knowing how they learn the best. Further, by knowing the relevance of the learning process, it is possible for them to appropriately navigate a broad range of existing choices in a learning environment and beyond. This would also mean that the educator is not the primary source of the learning process, the information and knowledge. By implementing this process, it becomes possible for the learners to work collaboratively and to their maximum benefit.
