Executive Summary

In modern competitive business environment, success in leadership and management development is influenced by a series of factors. These factors include making sure that the development process is guided by set organisation objectives, business environment needs and all stakeholders strengths and weaknesses. As part of this, ethical considerations are core for success in leadership and management development. The business ethics would need to be featured in phases of preparation, design and selection of the individuals to take part in their training. This report has identified the business ethics factors to include confidentiality, response, anonymity, fairness and just. The outcome of this is appropriate selection of the best people with right skills and capabilities, address of any bias and discrimination. Finally, various recommendations have been suggested to UPS organisation in UK for harnessing their competencies in embracing ethics in their leadership and management development.

1.0 Introduction

In a general perspective, ethical behaviours are categorised as core behaviours in the CIPD HR Professional Map 2018 (CIPD, 2021). An ethical practice entails building trust by role-modelling ethical behaviour, and applying principles and values consistently in decision-making. Hence, as a successful HR professional, it is essential to make responsible decisions through a balance of various ethical perspectives and shaping how ethics are informing broader decision-making process and governance. One of these areas is in the leadership and management development strategies. As noted in Training Journal (2021), the L&D professionals are uniquely placed for assisting in developing an ethical culture for an organisation and for ensuring that varying benefits are recognised and appreciated. Also, as shown in figure 1, the need for leadership and management development as identified in CIPD (2021a) is influenced by need to gain various requirements for their effectiveness in their roles. Hence, embracing appropriate ethics in leadership and management development is instrumental.

For example, after the emergence of COVID-19 pandemic, UPS organisation had been mandated to provide training to leadership and management to achieve best practice in support of health and well-being of their employees. Nevertheless, due to failure of embracing ethics in this, the organisation faced scandals  due to the facilitators of the training infringing with private data of participants. Based on this background information, by citing examples in UPS organisation, this report provides an evaluation of the role of business ethics in leadership and management development. This is while evidencing on ethical considerations to be prioritised to prepare, design, and selecting stakeholders involved in the training process.
