Question

Based on the group work you have been involved in, and your own research, compile a report for your own organisation’s senior managers (or for another organisation you are familiar with or been involved with) setting out the case for your organisation adopting the concept of employee health and wellbeing, with recommendations for a health and wellbeing programme.

Your report should:
a. Set out and compare the differences between primary and secondary sources you have used and justify your use of these sources, and the validity and reliability of the data you have researched as an individual or as part of the group activity.
b. Identify who the main stakeholders are that you are addressing the report to and analyse their interest and influence in the area being investigated.
c. Using an appropriate mix of diagrammatic and narrative formats, draw conclusions from your own and the group research and make recommendations to the stakeholders you have identified. Justify your conclusions and recommendations by reference to the data analysis you have undertaken.
d. Compile a health and wellbeing programme for your organisation as part of your recommendations.

This research has focused on establishing a best practice to support the health needs of Dubai Financial Services Authority (DFSA) that focus on delivery of financial and professional services. The recommendations were informed by a comprehensive review of the academic literature, focusing on specific health conditions arising in the employee who has worked in the organisation. The sourced data and literature was relevant in guiding others in implementing similar initiatives for health and wellbeing. From the reviewed sources, it is evident that there is sufficient evidence from the published literature in support of the development of a strategic workplace health promotion program. Three programs have been recommended form the company which includes a health promotion/wellness programs, mental health program, back pain and musculoskeletal health program and organizational approaches. Currently, the DFSA adopts a sophisticated understanding of the fundamental elements linking the issues of health and wellbeing to the bottom-line. This includes the link between the staff engagement and productivity, CSR enhancing global brand profiles, organizational culture and employee retention and recruitment. In regard to the lessons sourced from the reviewed evidence and company interviews, for harnessing the effectiveness of the set workplace health programs should be implemented in a strategic manner, developing across the entire organisation, established on the basis of the staff needs, and aiming at tackling the health issues at the source instead of dealing with the outcomes of the issues of poor health. This research has equally offered realistic and practical suggestions that can be used in supporting the health needs and well-being of an organisation workforce. The approaches must be based on assessing, planning, designing and implementing. Additionally, this can include the procedures to establishing, developing, ensuring, encouraging and evaluating strategies.

Outline of the research

Wellbeing can be identified as an individual experience of their life and a comparison of life circumstances with social norms and values. This means that the well-being scopes beyond the issues of health and safety as it equally relates to an individual lifestyle, its fitness in the facets of society. According to CIPD (2010), different organisations tend to be varied on the approach adopted in proactive promotion of the employee well-being and health in the context of CIPD. For instance, 40% adopts a standalone well-being strategy for supporting of their broader organizational strategy with the rest acting flexibly on an ad-hoc basis and in accordance with individual needs. Nevertheless, it is not clear on the best approach that can be used to mitigate the issue of health and well-being of employees.
This research has focused on a review of different research literature on the area of effectiveness of workplace health and well-being interventions with the aim of identifying and exploring the best practice characteristics. The review is also inclusive of examples of the interventions relevant for the financial and professional services provision by DFSA in Dubai, UAE.
