Part 1 (AC 1.1, 1.2, 2.1)

Write a short report (1000 words) in which you: 

  • explain the key reasons why learning needs may arise for individuals (at least two) and groups (at least two).
  • explain two benefits for the individual and two benefits for the organisation of identifying learning needs.
  • explain what information you should look to collect in order to carry out a learning needs analysis on an individual and a group (e.g. performance requirements, team objectives etc).

Part 2 (AC 2.2, 2.3, 2.4)

Activity and Written Summary (500 words)

Identify an individual in your organisation (or one you are familiar with) or your tutor will allocate you a fellow CIPD student and carry out the following activity.

  • Using at least three different methods, collect information from the individual and/or their organisation relating to their learning needs.
  • From the information gathered, produce a written summary in which you:
    • identify and prioritise, with justification, the three main learning needs.
    • explain at least three factors which may affect the choice of learning solution.

Development plan (AC 3.5 DEP)

Reflect on any learning from your assessment and wider study of the unit (including attendance at the workshop), and complete the Key Learning Summary of your Development Plan.  You should also identify any learning points for the future and update the Development Plan (using a different font colour or another visual indicator) accordingly.  You should submit your Key Learning Summary and Development Plan as a separate document on Moodle with your submitted assessment by the assessment deadline date.

Throughout the assessment, you should refer to best practice and relevant legislation where appropriate, and include reference to appropriate literature sources to demonstrate your wider reading. Demonstrating evidence of wider reading through appropriate referencing will improve your answer and increase the likelihood of your work achieving a ‘Pass’.

1.1: Key Reasons why Learning needs may arise for Individuals and Groups

In modern business environment, the rationale for sourcing learning needs could be obvious or varying. For instance, a CIPD (2018) report had pointed out that new IT or new equipment in a workplace could necessitate for a new form of training. This would be part of refreshing the individual skills as a result of changing in work roles. Others are skills levels, attitudes and knowledge against the demands to meet future needs. From an individual point of view, the reasons for learning needs include;

  • Quality development– in a work environment, there could be employees with behavioural, emotional, social and other challenges limiting their learning abilities. Hence, upon the identification of the weaknesses by the HR department, measures are put in place for their mitigation with the employees offered with an opportunity of acquisition of learning skills with minimal barriers.
  • Creating Interest– The learning needs could arise for creating an increased interest to boost the moral of employee and encourage them actively. Often, the learners would be failing in gaining an immense advantage from the high-level instruction.

For the group, the key reasons why learning needs could arise include;

  • Organising the Group in a team- A stakeholder in a team in the learning and development of a group is to identify all the characteristics of all the members in a group. The organisation of the group members is on the basis of their roles in the organisation, capacity to identify and understand roles and an easier accessibility to training and development opportunities.
  • Developing talents- In a group, all the members need to be passed through a process of skills understanding and development. In such a context, the facilitator of the learning and development actively identify skill or talent.
