1.1 Key Reasons Why Learning Needs May Arise for Individuals and Groups
For the individuals, the learning needs may arise due
- New technologies in the organisation: Among the main organisational changes is introducing new technologies to promote the efficiency of the goods and service delivery (Thompson, 2019). This creates a gap in one’s competence. Individuals may, therefore, require to acquire knowledge about these technologies to enhance their stay at the company.
- Keeping current with the labour and market trends: The market and labour trends dictate the skills and competencies that individuals need to integrate with the dynamics. In the healthcare sector, among the market trends is the need for individuals to acquire various competencies, such as communication, leadership, and teamwork. Individuals should, therefore, engage in life-long learning to acquire these competencies.
For groups, the learning needs may arise due to
- Customer satisfaction and service needs: Organisational strategies and objectives are influenced by customer preferences. In case there are continuous complaints from the customers, the organisation should conduct a learning need assessment to determine the foundation of this challenge. In the healthcare sector, some of the challenges may be delays and complaints at the reception. The organisation, therefore, establishes a learning program based on the evaluation.
- Keeping current with the industry trends: Among the external factors that affect an organisational performance are competition, dynamic customer needs, and technology (Casey, 2015). Companies, therefore, have to establish improvement strategies to remain competitive. For instance, healthcare organisations need to implement technologies, such as personal digital assistants (PDA) and electronic medical recording. These approaches require the company to educate all its employees to understand the use of these platforms. This ensures that the employees have the right skills according to industrial trend
1.2 Benefits for the Individuals and Organisation of Identifying Learning Needs
The benefits of identifying the learning needs for the individual include
- Assisting an individual to meet the personal objectives: Identification of the learning needs helps establish various approaches to bridge the knowledge gaps. These approaches, including enrolment in training courses and attending conferences and seminars, are vital in the individual achievement of the learning objectives. The learning needs are synchronised with the individual’s professional development plan (PDP).
- Addressing one’s weaknesses to promote the individual’s roles and responsibilities: Identifying the learning needs is essential in determining the strengths and weaknesses of the individual, including gaps in the individual’s knowledge (ACAS, 2020). Attending to these gaps improves the individual’s competence in the areas of weakness. This fosters service delivery. In the HR sector of healthcare, for instance, determining the gaps in technical knowledge is essential in improving the person’s competence.
