Activity 1 – The Context of Professional Development
As an introduction to your portfolio, explain the following:
- The concepts of CPD and Reflective Practice
- How the role of a people professional is changing and the implications this has for CPD. (3.1)
Activity 2 – Self Assessment
The first stage of CPD is to understand where we are and where we want to be.

Your self-assessment should include conclusions derived from other people’s feedback as well as your own reflections, on your behaviour and performance. (2.4, 3.2)
(An example self-assessment template, for Ethical Practice, is provided at Appendix 1 of this assignment brief and can be extended to accommodate the other core behaviours.)
- From your self-assessment, identify your weaker areas and your development objectives for addressing these. Determine the most appropriate professional development activities to meet your objectives, and add these to your Professional Development Plan (PDP). (3.2, 3.3)
Activity 3 – Reflective Practice
A key element of CPD is reflecting on the impact of our learning and development, so that we can make further decisions about how to progress.
To compete this assignment, provide a reflective record of how key aspects of your (formal or informal) learning and development, over the last 12 months, have impacted your performance at work and/or general behaviour. (3.4).

Concepts of CPD and Reflective Practice
In CIPD (2021), the concept of CPD is identified as an integration of approaches, ideas and techniques for assisting management of individual learning and growth. CPD focus is significantly integrated to the results, with the professional development brining benefits to the real world. Further, as identified in APM (2021), the reflective practice include the process used for analysing an individual continuing professional development (CPD) activities. In my experience as a HR professional, I use this as a method of establishing my development activities, modifying my actions, behaviours and learning objectives effectively.
How People Professional Role is Changing
Similar to how the CIPD HR Professional Map has changed (CIPD, 2021a), the HR people professional roles are also significantly changing. Particularly, the HR function ensure they execute active resourcing, career growth and career development. Also, employee engagement, influence scope and motivation is relevant evidencing the people professionals roles changes. Additionally, Michael (2019) note that owing to the rapid advent of technology, this has a direct influence on change of the people professional roles by guiding collaborative work for organisation success. The sourced information and data analytics are found to change the extent in which resourcing is implemented and capacity development approaches. The role has specifically changed in the current COVID-19 pandemic where performance issues, return to work approaches and organisation practices is instrumental.
Importance of Changes on CPD
To note the extent in which the evident changes of people professionals roles impact the CPD CIPD (2021b), the HR professionals harness consistency in their development. An appropriate instance is the core values and purpose applied to drive professional standards as a constant factor. This is noticeable from new job functions, specialism and to prioritise on emergence of new opportunities which lead to the need for relevant reflection for their global audience.
Additionally, the best approach to ensure resourcing is in tandem with assessment of resources, being facilitated, coaching and mentoring in best practice on cultural and behaviours practices being important.
