1.0 Introduction

In the contemporary competitive business environment, investment in a Learning and Development (L&D) strategy is essential for an organisation to develop a sustainable business strategy. L&D is defined in CIPD (2020a) as a strategy in which an organisation develop its workforce’s capabilities, skills and competencies to remain successful. A significant characteristic of an L&D strategy is all employees’ capacity development. Practically, this can include focusing on high-performing or high-potential employees (talent) instrumental in enabling long-term organisation success. L&D strategies include mentoring programs targeting senior leaders, in-house development courses, and project-based learning.  Additionally, CIPD (2017) survey report noted that the best practice in the development of an effective L&D strategy is first noting the internal and external business environment. This is the industry, business needs, and rationale driving an overall entity strategy.  Also, the political, social, cultural, and technological dimensions are important in L&D set strategies. Taking this background into account, the case study company WBA plc appreciates that to capitalize on the expected business improvement with 62% of organisations planning to increase their investment in IT products and services, investing in an L&D strategy is essential. Nevertheless, their current L&D strategy is under-developed. Hence, this report presents an evaluation of how the organisation can improve on their current L&D strategy to solve current challenges. From the review, recommendations have been provided on the best strategies to be implemented based on priority.
