Determining a Need and Gap in Practice

Background and Significance

Despite there being available recommendations and strategies on how to manage obesity, successful prevention and treatment continues to be unmet in clinical practices (Plourde & Prud’homme, 2012). According to the Centers for Disease Control (2017), more than one-third of the United States (US) adult population suffers from obesity. There is little to no intervention from the primary care physician’s office after they advise a patient that is obese to lose weight. Evidence indicates that patients that are advised by primary care physicians are more likely to lose weight, however most patients are told to lose weight but do not receive weight-loss counseling (Plourde & Prud’homme, 2012). This is usually due to a deficit of time.  Licensed providers have heavy patient loads that limit the amount of time that they are able to dedicate to each patient visit. Wadden et al (2013) state that the possibility of providing such counseling is unlikely with the primary care provider’s (PCP) pressing demands on their schedules. Not only does this not allow time for obesity counseling, it drives visits to be presenting disease problem driven.
