Contemporary companies are acknowledging that for them to remain competitive, they should focus on the leadership and management development. In the last decade, Willis et al. (2017) note that the majority of companies have faced rapid changes, including technology, globalisation, wide range of careers, and the changing company structure. Leaders and managers play a core role in creating a high-performing company. It is therefore imperative for firms to develop the management and leadership to produce talented individuals that can transform the company to ensure sustainable competitiveness.

2.0Leadership and Management Development

Leadership and management development focuses on the future stewardship and governance of the company. It involves forging an agenda to dictate the structure, fitting values, and program content to promote the leaders and managers’ competencies. There is a difference between leadership development and management development. In leadership development, it is concerned with developing a leader to understand oneself as the leader. According to Anderson (2017), leadership development entails equipping the individual with the right skills and competences, including teamwork, communication, and interpersonal. This ensures that the individual’s skills are aligned with the company’s strategy and vision (Wajdi, 2017). Management development involves the manager getting a grip of the process and hard elements, including planning, prioritisation, execution, and control.

The advantages of leadership and management development include;
