Individual Case #2: Is there an Ethics of Writing Papers?
In the modern world of academic characterised with an increased technology, ethics in research has similarly increased in their popularity. The case study had focused on the findings published in 2010 survey generating findings that more than 40,000 high school learners use internet and other technology platforms in their research work leading to instances of plagiarism. Being an ethical issue, many learners lack the awareness on the scope in which plagiarism impact on their integrity and also success in learning process. As a result, there has been an increased trend of learners lacking an appropriate understanding of the exact aspect of plagiarism and its impact to the learner’s experience and ethical practices.
As highlighted in the case provided, there are instances where plagiarism is noted to have occurred. For example, as part of doing research, learners can copy and paste content from online resources without accrediting their sources. Also, a more recent trend has been learners engaging online space tutors for assisting them in answering their custom-made essays. Also, although a rare trend, educators maliciously assist learners to pass their units and exams or using other learners’ assistance.
In an event a professor/teacher finds a learner is guilty of plagiarism, the basic action to take is to create awareness on how the unethical practice impact integrity of their course. Also, since there is a gap of understanding the scope of plagiarism in research work, there is a need for ensuring that they appreciate the scope of plagiarism.
