The topic of Investigation: Improving employee operational efficiency through disruptive innovative processes in UK Small Medium Enterprises (SMEs)

1.0 Background

1.1 Context of Research

In the UK, the SMEs are immensely involved in the facilitation of growth and economic progress of the country. This is from their roles in job creation, promoting growth and income accrued by the entrepreneurs and transformation of the local communities. This is evidenced by a study by Aris (2007) that focused on evaluating the SMEs as building blocks for economic growth in Malaysia. The study findings pointed out that the SMEs characterise a critical background of the global economy. Nevertheless, the direct contribution of the SMEs in the entire or gross value-addition in UK economy is marginally limited contrary to their contributions to employment sector (Karami et al., 2008). For instance, due to the slow integration of SMEs as opposed to MNEs in UK, Enterprise Research Center (2018) report had noted that the UK aggregate productivity growth measured on the basis of individual worker output has deteriorated. This is also evident in the other developed countries such as G7 where UK is a member. Hence, increased uptake of SMEs and regulation of their operational efficiency would positively impact their productivity performance and harness a nation long-term wellbeing.
