Better working lives, according to Acas (2020a), is about building positive and meaningful work experiences for employees beyond pay and job security. It is about establishing environments which allow people to feel valued, supported, and nurtured to thrive both professionally and personally. In a newly merged public sector organisation, focusing on better working lives can help rebuild morale, trust and engagement during the structural change (CIPD, 2018).

Pay and Benefits

Competitive and equitable pay and benefits structures are one effective way to design better working lives. Disparities in pay or benefit among employees of the two merged public sector entities could lead to dissatisfaction in the merged public sector organisation (CIPD, 2025a). In light of this, people professionals should review pay to ensure it is fair, correct inconsistencies and enhance financial wellbeing. In addition, introducing flexible benefits, including additional leave purchase schemes or wellness allowances, could address diverse employee needs and enhance work experiences, resulting in a motivated and committed workforce.
