Utilitarianism
According to Utilitarianism the most ethical selection consists of achieving maximum benefits for the biggest number of people (Duignan and West, 2025). Judgement under this method depends on all social and personal wellness effects which affect every participant in the society. Utilitarianism defines ethical choices through creating maximum benefits that decrease maximum problems. The decision-making procedure takes influence from the principles of Utilitarianism when dealing with workforce restructuring and reductions. The organisation needs to choose a measure which will reduce negative impacts on personnel together with stakeholders throughout downsizing procedures. For personnel dismissal the organisation should offer three options which include allowing employees to resign voluntarily and enhancing their skills while giving appropriate severance payments.
Influence on Decision-Making
Utilitarians benefit human resources professionals to make decisions by using data resulting in both organisational success and societal advantages (CIPD, 2023). Utilitarianism faces its primary weakness when rights of individuals disappear because their needs compete against what advantages a majority stands to gain. HR professionals need to choose ethical options that provide practical benefits for equal treatment between individuals while upholding personal constraints
Universalism
Universalism as an ethical principle requires moral rule application through standardised standards that cover every situation and individual as Damianus et al., 2022 indicate. Organisations under this perspective make it their mission to preserve equality throughout the workplace by strictly following ethical codes which demand consistent treatment of both staff members and stakeholders. My organisation implements universal standards to create its human resources policies regarding diversity equity and inclusion practises. The recruitment and promotional stages at the organisation implement clear criteria which provide equal assessment power to all candidates independent of their personal background. Every department at the organisation must follow the same standardised workplace policies that cover disciplinary procedures along with employee benefits through current ethical universalism.
Influence on Decision-Making
Unbiased ethical consistency becomes achievable in universalist frameworks since they work to eliminate individual discrimination. The management workforce requires universal principles to establish policies that follow organisational mandates and legal requirements. Universalist policies maintain their consistency while facing challenges related to exceptional assessments of individual cases. Highly effective decision-making by HR professionals includes utilising universalist standards in combination with specific situational understanding to create ethical choices (CIPD, 2023).
