Question

As a healthcare organisation, the owners of Healthcare on Hand are keen to support wellbeing at work.  They have some concerns about work-life balance as their employees start work early, work evenings and weekends, in addition to providing healthcare support during weekdays. The owners are keen to comply with relevant legislation and aim to provide their employees with work-life balance.  The clients of Healthcare on Hand are diverse, and the owners feel the diversity of their workforce should also reflect their client population but think there might be more to diversity than this.

Your manager asks you to produce a guidance document to provide the owners and managers at Healthcare on Hand with a fundamental understanding of employment legislation and organisational practices.

Work-Life Balance Definition Using Wood’s definition from 2018,   work-life balance refers to a person’s capacity to engage in personal pursuits while also fulfilling their organizational responsibilities. Additionally, according to Sirgy & Lee (2018), achieving work-life balance is essential for creating a positive workplace culture. Regulations influencing work-life balance Exceptional Leave Policy This law emphasises that even with little advance warning, employees are qualified to take an exceptional leave. The significance of this legislation in enhancing work-life balance is that it gives employees a chance to deal with issues like a dependent’s passing, that dependent being unwell, how to care for a dependent, and unforeseen disruptions from illness or accidents. As a result, this policy gives employees the chance to handle both their personal and professional responsibilities. Employee commitment to performing their duties increases as a result of feeling recognised by the organization. Employment Rights Act 1996 According to Shifrin & Michel (2020), the COVID-19 pandemic’s prevalence has contributed to the introduction of the Flexible Working Act 2022. According to this legislation, employees have the right to request flexible work arrangements.
