Solution

Mission, Vision, and Personal Goals
Are you familiar with Walden University’s vision and mission? Were they a factor in selecting this University? How do they relate to your professional and academic goals? Does it matter if there is a tight or loose relationship or one at all? This week’s Discussion asks you to think about how the Walden mission and vision and the School of Nursing (SON) mission and vision apply to your professional and academic goals. Is there a match? How does Walden’s mission and vision relate to your becoming a scholar-practitioner committed to social change?
To prepare:
• Review the Walden and SON mission and vision statements, Walden’s goals and University Outcomes, and the MSN Program Learning Outcomes presented in this week’s Learning Resources.
• Reflect on your professional and academic goals as they relate to your program/specialization.
• Consider how the information in the documents, identified above, fit with your own goals and to your becoming a scholar-practitioner.
• Think about how you will incorporate your commitment to social change into your professional and academic goals, particularly as it relates to the area(s) of interest represented by your program/specialization.

How I Relate to Walden University’s SON Vision and Mission
I was working in a stand-alone emergency room and had a Family Nurse Practitioner student that was precepting with a physician and she stated she was extremely satisfied with education she was receiving at Walden University. I had checked into several different programs but they did not offer very much flexibility and just did not seem like the place for me. But after hearing her praises I decided to check into Walden University, and much to my surprise I found a school in which the vision and mission statement aligned with my values as well as offered the flexibility I would need. As reported by Walden University’s SON (2011), the curriculum offered at Walden is made to be challenging and culturally diverse to better prepare me to make positive changes and in turn providing better care for patients and my community.

Providing a Positive Social Change
While further investigating the Walden University (2011) states that “In addition, Walden supports positive social change through the development of principled, knowledgeable, and ethical scholar-practitioners, who are and will become civic and professional role models by advancing the betterment of society (para. 6). After reflecting on why I have chosen the path to become a Family Nurse Practitioner over other specialties and it’s very clear that my passion and community needs have brought me here. Since I became a nurse some 11 years ago, the increasing need for mid-level Healthcare providers has grown and I believe is my calling. My goal as a professional is to be a Family Nurse Practitioner which in turn requires me to obtain an advanced degree. My passion to help fill the need in my community is the core of why I want to become a Family Nurse Practitioner and this journey is where my soul is. I have high expectations for this program and I am positive I will receive the intrinsic education that will be critical for my success as a Family Nurse Practitioner. This is supported by Walden University’s statement “provides a diverse community of career professionals with the opportunity to transform themselves as scholar-practitioners so that they can effect positive social change” (Walden University, 2011, para. 2). Using the knowledge obtained while attending this program, I will strive to have a holistic and compassionate, approach in providing care for my community by treating each patient with dignity and respect.
