Interventions in Workarounds
Nursing workarounds have gained much relevance in the recent past, matching with an increased focus on patient safety and the implementation of health information technologies (Collins et al., 2012). However, workarounds can put patients at risk when the health players fail to consider the right protocols and ethical obligations (Gephart et al., 2016). Based on a previous workaround device that was developed by my fellow nurse, the paper will examine reasons for that particular workaround ending up with unintended consequences.
The incident where three types of assistive devices developed by one of my fellow patients is an example of workaround. The project was designed as an alert to remind a patient suffering from dementia to take medicine after every 6 hours. However, this practice goes against the protocol established by the organization. Scholarly works essentially regard nursing workarounds performed by nurses as negative behaviors reflecting a poor nursing skill which requires to be abolished as they make patients be more vulnerable to detrimental safety hazards (Samaras et al., 2012).
