international media attention at some time during the past two years.
1. Choose one from a selection of four articles (from Moodle – Assignment folder).
2. Identify management topics from the lecture program which are relevant to the issue(s)
discussed in the article.
3. Identify the company, its context, industry sector etc.
4. Provide a brief summary of the issue that the managers in the case are confronting.
5. Use relevant management concepts and theories as the ‘lens’ through which you critically
evaluate the performance of management in addressing the issue.
6. Make a judgment, based on the critical review you conduct in steps 1-4 above, about the
management strategies/ decisions that were or could be tried to resolve the issue, and what
worked or didn’t work, and why.
7. Recommend any different approach that might be taken to resolve the issue, and explain why.
Your ability to link concepts and theories to real life problems, and argue your opinion based on
evidence, is important here.

The essay should consist of an introductory paragraph which makes reference
to the original article, any issues identified, and then an explanation of what
will be discussed throughout the essay
The main body of the essay should combine a discussion of the identified
problem areas with your understanding of relevant theories – you should add
examples of how theory can be applied to the real world (e.g. what types of
leadership theory you can identify from your article, and then examples of
people with those traits today)
The next section (conclusion/summary) should summarise your discussion,
and link it with the introduction – this is where you demonstrate how your
discussion has answered or acknowledged how you would correct the issues

Introduction
In the modern organization practices, the issue of management forms a critical determinant of their success in the competitive market characterized by change (McCleskey, 2014). In light of this, this essay focuses on the United States Navy which is a military segment mandated in the protection of the American waters. This group is also involved in different security operations in various countries globally. The rationale for selecting this organization as a choice of evaluation in this essay was based on the retention issues the company faced in the past. The situation was so dire that the management had to be changed in the verge of collapse of this critical arm of the US government. In this essence, this essay will provide an argument that in the contemporary management practice, none of the managers should manage all the human resources and information. There is a need to stagger the skills and brainpower in an approach that compel the vision and precise values. To achieve this, this paper will be segmented into a description of the issue, theoretical analysis, recommendations, and conclusion.
Brief Description of the Issue
The management issue presented in the article include approaches to management and change and innovation management. In the US, the corporate and US Navy are faced with a major issue of employee retention. In a general perspective, employees transit from one start-up to another within a very short duration (Oladapo, 2014). A similar phenomenon was in existence in the US Navy when approximately 40% of the highly trained and talented workforce would leave the entity prior the completion of their initial four years of placement. This situation was manifested during the reign of USS Benfold (Abrashoff, 2001). Upon the assumption of the military arm command, Michael Abrashoff had to approach this problem critically and solve it once and for all. Fortunately, he managed to mitigate this issue successfully, and today the vessel is regarded as the pride of the Pacific Fleet with the sailors from other crews clamoring for an opportunity to join the crew. In the article Abrashoff (2001), the author provides a personal experience on the approaches he adopted in successfully redeeming the entity that was on the verge of collapse. First, he had to break both personal and professional bad habits and to jettison all the old perceptions. Secondly, through his 21 experience in Benford, he had appreciated to the fact that in the contemporary intensive US Navy, the traditional command-and-control style had no relevance to elicit the much-needed change it is this reason that the 310 sailors of Benford sheered ceremoniously when Abrashoff’s predecessor left the ship.
As a transition from the two manager’s leadership, there was a significant change that prompted a change in the practices that dominated the ship management. For instance, the 225 years of the Navy tradition and his target of engaging the sailors in their operations characterized an increase in their performance delineating them around all their overall tours of duty. Ultimately, all the crew members were retained through a strategic practice of redeeming them and showing them the best practice of not only being sailors but leveraging their personal life. This implied a practice of breaking their current self in their worst and later building them to become the best (Milman & Dickson, 2014).
Critical Analysis According to Walker et al. (2014), the form of leadership that Abrashoff was focused on altering was the traditional command-and-control. This is basically a do-as-i-say approach to leadership where the captain’s order is perceived as the finality and hence no leeway for debating or questioning from any of the subordinates.
