Plagiarism in UK Universities and Possible Solutions of Eradication
Introduction
In any individual in academia, academic publishing is critical. According to Bakhtiyari et AL. (2014) all the research students, lecturers, professors and the researchers in a general perspective are expected to engage in publishing their works with the results of their studies in academic conference proceedings, books, journals, and magazines. Even though sourcing a paper already published is significantly critical, the originality and ethics of the context of a published paper are extensively critical in equal measure. Plagiarism is defined by Fishman (2009) as an act of copying a person text, idea, or language and publishing the work as their work. This is an act that is contrary to the existing laws and as such all authors and researchers should ensure they avoid any form of plagiarism in their manuscripts whatsoever. According to Guardian (2018) report, the number of students who have been caught practicing plagiarism in the UK top universities has significantly increased up by a third in three years with a warning that the institutions are ignoring the problem. This is evidenced by the figures already published by the guardian from freedom of information requests to Russell Group Universities. In particular, the report has noted that the rate of academic misconduct has surged by approximately 40% from 2640 to 3721 between 2015 and 2017. In this regard, it is essential to evaluate the plagiarism in the UK universities and the potential solutions of eradication.
Prevalence of Plagiarism in UK Universities
In the UK context, Leeds University had recorded the highest number in reports of plagiarism with the cases having doubled from 181 to 433 within a short period of 3 years (Guardian, 2018). This was closely followed by Glasgow University which had recorded an all-time high number of plagiarism cases to 370 within a similar period of three years. These figures are increasingly soaring in the wake of the government concern on the issue of contract cheating which involve students employing ghostwriters in completing their assignment. According to Bakhtiyari et al. (2014), there are different forms of plagiarism that have been reported in UK universities. They are equally identified as factors which might contribute to the possibility of the plagiarism problem being cited.
Uncited Ideas and Concepts
It is a primary requirement for scholars to engage in the reading of multiple secondary sources for the sake of delivering positive contribution in the area of science (Ale Ebrahim, 2014). Nevertheless, the use of other people or researchers’ ideas is viewed as plagiarism unless in an event their research articles are cited and referenced appropriately in their manuscript. Even in the event of citing, it is a primary requirement that the authors avoid direct copying of the sentence structures of their authors.
